Personally I think James and the Giant Peach is horribly scary. The nasty aunts that treat him badly and end up getting killed is not exactly warm and fuzzy.
I also think that most of the Grimm's fairy tales in the original form are pretty violent. A wicked stepmother/queen ordering the heart of Snow White to be cut out after she is killed? Now that's Jack the Ripper nasty!
