First of all I think your colleagues are snobs! They should be happy that you even want to get them gifts! Second, I still believe in gift cards to restaurants, everyone eats! Third, See's candy for the ladies and maybe DVD's or CD's for the guys.....good luck! and Merry Christmas. ;)

i just read a survey about gift cards, how people forget to use them and the companies just make a bundle from us for nothing.
i'd rather buy a gift that keeps giving (ie. something generic that if person A you give to dont want to keep he/she can fob it off to person B next season without it looking dated)
but if you know your colleagues then you should get them something you think they might like. problem is, those things are probably on the shopping list of people whom they are even closer to. so the best is to go and ask them if you are close enough.
i have the same problem as you, but i am not going to worry, since i always have that perfect plan (see above) :)

Not always; but I do try to reuse at least some of the wrappings. I buy wrapping paper that uses recycled paper when I can find it, but I rarely reuse the wrapping paper....although reading the answers has given me an idea to iron the paper....;) I do reuse bags and boxes. Some of our gift bags have been used for 5 years. I have some boxes that we've used for 3 or 4 years. My husband was teasing me yesterday because I saved some of the tissue paper from the bags too. I have 3 of the giant plastic gift bags that have been around for nearly 10 years. I use the paper from our shredding machine in packages that I ship. I'm still trying to figure out a way to dye it or paint it to use in gift bags.....:)

Gift baskets of food or beverages are always nice. Great selection and readily available or make your own customized creations.
Some ideas are:
wine, fruit, cheese
gourmet coffee, flavorings, mug
pasta, sauce, etc in a nice serving bowl
snack attack - soft drink, candy, popcorn, etc.
chocolate or other candy assortment
World Market is a great place to pick up some unusual specialty items.

In the supermarket you will find inexpensive preserve jars and bottles. Fill them with Jelly Beans and tie a ribbon around the lid. Everyone loves Jelly Beans! This is going to cost way less than $20 but will be a hit.

Search for a good bakery in your area that can put together an assortment of cookies, the bakery should be able to box them up and tie a ribbon around them as well. Merry Christmas

For the women, go to a store that sells chocolate. I've never met a woman that doesn't like chocolate. For the men...well....maybe a money clip, or a flask if that's acceptable where you work. If someone smokes, maybe get them some nice cigars or a Zippo lighter.

Give them chocolates or decorative cookies. Chocolates are something that everyone enjoys; the same can be said about cookies.
And you don't have to worry about them passing your gift off to somebody else.
