It really boils down to what you think. Why do you need to know? Is the animal in question for you or someone else? Consider these things. Then look at it from there. If it is for you what would you rather have? Dogs can be trained to guard a single person or house ect. But from what I know need more training all around. Cats on the other hand are more self reliant and might be a better choice if youjust want something to keep you company without a lot of work.Just do a little soal searching and a little reasearch .The answer will come to you.

I wouldnt say that either one is better.. the better question is what is your lifestyle?
If you want a dog - you have to have a lot of time to give to that animal. They are very rewarding, but are a lot more hands on. You have to walk them, clean them, monitor them and get sitters for them if you go out of town for a day or 2.
If you want a cat - they are more independant and can take care of themselves. Most cats dont eat up all their food or have to be let outside if you need to go away for a couple days. They are smaller so they are more apartment friendly (although some dogs are too).
Both give you love and both are fantastic to have as pets.. I myself have a cat right now as I am very pressed for time and am renting a room at my friends house. It would be nice to have a dog someday, but for my lifestyle a cat is ideal. So choosing one.. I say CAT!

Neither one is better. They're both great for different reasons. I prefer dogs because they seem happier to see you and give a sh** if you're there. Cats on the other hand are very aloof, and could get along fine without you. I have cats as well as dogs btw....makes life interesting.

They are both good in different ways. For example a dog is good because it is very playful. It's bad because they are messy and you have to clean up their poop if they poop on someones lawn or something like that. They are also bad because they need someone their constantly and need a fenced in yard. A cat is good because they like dogs are playful and adorable just like dogs. They are also good because they could care less if you are there or not. Bad because cleaning out their litterbox is DISGUSTING! It's your decision from here on in.

i would say dogs. cats are fine but they urinate through the house and they shed. dogs shed also but they respond to you better than a cat and if they do shed, you can take them to the groomer or bath them yourself. cats HATE taking baths. I've had 4 cats and 1 dog

Depends on your lifestyle. If you're willing to give your pet a lot of time and attention, get a dog.
If you can't do that, then get a cat.
Me personally, I'd prefer a cat because they're more low-maintenance and they have many, many, many, many, many, maaaaany ways of making complete fools out of themselves. :D
