Ok, so I posted a question this morning about my dog being lovesick. Now, I am worried. Could she be in heat? I have not spayed her because I got her very recently and was waiting for the Christmas break to do it. I saw a drop of blood on the couch two days ago but I had been cutting her nails. I thought it was from that but I couldn't find a bloody nail. She has been rather strange over the last few days, whining more than usual. She had several accidents in the house which is not normal for her. The vet told me that she was about a year old (she is a rescued chi). What could be wrong? Please don't judge me. My intention is to get her spayed!

I'm worried because she was with the neighbor's dog. I thought for sure that he was neutered until I called the owner to ask. I'm upset at the moment because of this.

Apart from the drop of blood, she's not bleeding. Ugh. I can't believe this is happening. I haven't had her very long!

It definately sounds like she is in heat/has her period. I bred dogs for several years until I became to ill to take care of them all. All of the things you have mentioned are normal for a dog in heat. You need to remember, she is still a puppy and poor little girl has no clue what is happening to her. You definately need to get her fixed as soon as you can. She will be this way anywhere from 1 week to 4 weeks. You will not know exactally, because more than likely this is her first time. You need to keep an eye on her and write down the day you first noticed the blood, because you really don't want to have her spayed during her heat cycle, its possible to do, but you dont want any complications to happen. So you are better off waiting. You also need to keep her inside and if you do take her out use a leash, just to be safe, I'm pretty sure male dogs can smell that she is in heat for a mile or so away. I can't remember exactally how far, but use the leash to be sure. You may not always notice the blood when she is in heat either because she will constantly clean herself. If you look at her backside, you may notice the swelling.

Here is a site for you do took at for more info on her heat cycle.

As a breeder, I worry more about the female dogs getting fixed because of ovarian cancer.

Good luck to you.

no one should judge you because your dog's in heat.... if she's a year old, then she probably is in heat. it will happen once every 6 months, until you get her spayed. don't worry about it.... just keep her indoors as much as you can, and don't let her get away from you, or you could end up with a pregnant pup.

good luck!!

My former dog used to go crazy when she was in heat. Unless she has to pee, DON"T LET HER OUT OF THE HOUSE!!! She will try to sneak away then come home pregnant. Just put up with it and get her fixed ASAP.....=0)
Good luck!
