Harsh heat is very damaging to hair just like the Sun's UV rays. There are ways of preparing your hair for the hot iron like serums.
You can go the chemical straightening route which will damage your hair but it'll leave it straight for 6 months +. This is more of a semi-permeable way to get your hair straight. If you want to do this, take it to a professional. It's kinda costly but lots of people do it because they dont have to flat iron every day. Just remember that the stronger the chemical, the more damage it will do to your hair. The damage will make your hair dry and thin. So ask whoever is applying it, if they have a chemical set that will suit your needs. It also takes a few hours to finish.
I say the best way to calm and smooth your hair down is with
your shampoo/conditioner. You can't use a cheap brand. Trust me. You'll want to go with Biosilk, Paul Mitchell Smoothing (Super Skinny), etc. My clients have had lots of success with Biosilk and Paul Mitchell as shampoos and conditioners to help smooth out hair. I also recommend a leave-in conditioner such as Matrix - Biolage Smoothing Balm. This will get your hair naturally smoother without flat ironing it. Paul Mitchell also has its Super Skinny serum which is quite effective also. Wash/condition once every 3 days. Do not rinse your hair if you take a shower everyday. The natural oils in your hair keep your hair down and smooth. I know these products are expensive compared to the non-salon quality (loreal, garnier, etc) brands but it's worth it!
After that, use a ceramic iron on mild. If you've been using cheap shampoos/conditioners, you'll see a huge difference once you switch!
Private salons always have deals for these types of products. Don't buy at a chain store, it'll cost you a little more. I've seen Biosilk at Costco (shampoo, conditioner) for really cheap. Also, if you're purchasing online like ebay, you'll want to make sure the item is factory sealed. I've come across some people who replace the substance with the generic version which is underpar.

I have thick wavy hair, too. To start, I use L'Oreal Heat Protectant cream, then straighten my hair with a flat iron. After it is straightened, I protect my hair with Garnier Fructis Frizz-Free cream. The Garnier Fructis stuff keeps my hair straight all day long.

I have fine wavy hair and I use Remington's Wet to Dry straigtheners.
I guess you're looking into something more longterm, however, so chemical straigthening seems to be the only way to go. Boots does a kit for £14.99, but I would NOT recommend doing it yourself if you're not sure what to do.

I've got the same problum 2, I use the CHI straightner and the CHI silk infusion, the prices are a little hi but its worth it. They last for a long time and work real good 2.
The CHI silk infusion makes your hair soft, silky, and smelling good. If you put it on before drying your hair it protects your hair as well

I have the same problem! I use Frizz Ease Straight Ahead Shampoo and Conditioner and Frizz Ease Hair Serum. You could try the Sunsilk De-Frizz stuff. They say it'll make your hair less frizzy.
