Safety of the child is your main priority. Make sure you always are in view of the child. Use common sense in what is safe and what is not. Don't talk on the phone or have friends over while the child is awake. Some activities for infants include rocking, singing, finger plays (like itsy bitsy spider), feeding, and reading. Toddlers enjoy being active. Preschool children tend to enjoy imaginative play like dress up, playing house, and playing games. Before they leave ask the parents for emergency information, what the child is allowed to eat, what the bedtime routine is (if you will be responsible for putting him to bed), areas off limits, and what best comforts the child. Good Luck and have fun.

I started to write (and something happened) the number one thing to be aware of is safety. Is the child safe? If you are diapering him/her, make sure the baby can't roll off the area, and keep a hand on the baby even when you lean over to get a diaper, etc. If there are toddlers, make sure open cans and bottles aren't in reach, don't let them run around tables with sharp low edges like coffee tables, don't let them place small objects in their mouth, etc. Think safety, make sure she/he can't fall down steps, put the toilet lid down so the water can't be reached, never, never for a second leave them alone in a bath tub, like if the doorbell rings or phone rings.....and most of all, keep your eye on the child. I would not take a telephone call from a friend, not watch TV and not get interested in anything else like that because for this first time on the job you want to focus on doing it right! Once you know the lay of the land, you can relax a bit, but NEVER relax too much....children can so easily wander out of sight when you are on the phone or watching TV.

lol, depends on how old the kid/kids are. If their older then just watch a movie or play games with them. If their younger just let them play and keep an eye on them. Unless the kid/kids throw fits the whole time it should't be that bad. Good luck
