food poisoning usually occurs within a few hours of eating bad food. that's when you start vomiting (and maybe also diarrhea) usually it lasts for several hours, not more than 24 in most cases... but no chills or fever or aches and pains.
flu can include vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, aches, pains, and cold-like symptoms. most times the flu takes a while longer to clear up, a few days or a week...
also, food poisoning isn't contageous (depending on how many people eat the bad food), but the flu is contageous.
hope this helps.
feel better!
either way, try to keep hydrated with water and electrolytes, like gatorade... even if you can't keep it down, still better to puke it back up than to empty your intestines and start puking up stomach bile...

I am by no means a doctor, but I live in Mexico where my children and I have had aliments from food or water. There are scientific methods to determine what you have, and if you have eaten in a questionable place, you may need to let your doctor know this. Both of my children contracted typhoid 5 years ago from eating in a respectable restaurant. The symptoms were similar to the flu, but unlike the 24 hour flu, the recovery time took days and their state of well being changed from good to bad several times in the course of several days. The same has been for salmonellae and amoebas. Just be careful that you have these simple inexpensive test taken before you doctor sends you through a battery of test. We have had friends who have had bad experiences with this in the States. Here in Mexico, the protocol is to test for food poisoning first. But this not necessarily true for the States.

I ate poorly cooked chicken 10 years ago. The food poisoning lasted 24 hours. Don't wish that on anyone.
The flu, never had the full blown flu. So can't compare.

The "flu" is an upper respiratory virus. Symptoms are headache, fever, coughing, aches, sore throat, etc. Food poisoning is going to affect your digestive system. Vomiting and diarrhea is common, along with aches, etc. Different bacteria can cause food poisoning, and different bacteria can produce different symptoms. Example, clostridium botulinum is deadly! You can do a search on some of the most common bacteria that causes food poisoning, two of which would be salmonella and e.coli

Want food poisoning=eat Wendy's chicken sandwiches, characterized by massive noise, gas, pain of the bowel. Followed by nausea and a total lack of control of the bowel.
Flu characterized by (after having flu shot, thank you) even your hair hurts...as in all the hair on your body, your teeth hurt, it's miserable,,..,,..then add nausea, diarrhea (at the same time), fever, and a total lack of energy. You'll know the difference

Last night I mixed a small piece of hamburger (4 days old) with some fresh hamburger and just a few hour later man oh man I was sick as a dog. Had no fever but diarrhea and chills I had. Spent six or seven hrs up and down....
Wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I read 9 out of 10 times, you don't have the flue, it's mild food poisoning. I don't know if that's correct, but it makes since.
Hope this helps.
