the reason i would do this would then be to lay free odds bets on either the pass or dont pass based on what the point was...i.e. if the point was 6 or 8 i would lay odds on the pass and leave my dont pass alone and if the point was 4 or 10 i would lay odds on the dont pass and leave the pass alone

It is allowed. The only time a casino will frown on and perhaps not allow it is if you are using match play coupons in conjunction with each bet.
The house's edge is a percentage of the amount bet. If you place $5 on Pass and $5 on Don't Pass, over the long run you are paying 7 cents and 6.8 cents respectively (based on a 1.4% and 1.36% edge), for a total of 13.8 cents per game. Neither you nor the casino make money on the odds over the long run.
It is preferable to place a $5 bet with single odds rather than a $10 bet without odds because the edge is only working on the initial $5 bet.
Your best option, cost-wise, is to place either Pass or Don't Pass but not both bets. Also, remember that odds are neutral over mathematical infinity, but that over the short term you are risking more money by playing them. The casino's bankroll being greater than yours, bad luck can punish you more severely.

It's called a doey/dont bet.I never use it but here is the reasoning behind it.You stay pretty much even and avoid the early 7 outs .When a shooter makes his 1st pass you forego the doey/dont and bet pass only with odds and maybe some come bets as well or place bet the 6 and 8.
The idea is he has to make one pass to make 2 then 3 and so on .It is a safety play with a flaw already mentioned as per the 2 or 12 but they are only one possibility in 36 possibilitys and I have played tables were neither one showed for up to 2 hrs.

As for the roulette comment if you put a chip on single zero and a chip on double zero you will still get payed 35 to 1 for the one that hits .Most people "split" the zeros as a hedge bet for a 17 to 1 payout if either hits.I dont bet the zeros ever.

It's legal, but it's a losing bet.

One of the combinations is a tie...It's either snake eyes or box cars.

So if you bet both you are guaranteeing that you will lose money.

Let's say it's snake eyes that is the tie...On every other combination you will neither win nor lose...but when snake eyes comes up you will lose your pass bet and only push your don't pass bet yielding a net loss.

Get my 10 points ready 'cause her comes the answer- you bet 1 unit (red, green or BLACK chips just name your poison) on the don't pass and 2 units on the pass line ,if a point is established you go through the don't come for 1 unit while "laying " 2x odds against the point ,if you get another number go through the don't come again and once that number is established you drop down to single odds against the point or gamble and leave it at 2x. either way in this system the 7 is NEVER working against you- and on a choppy table this is GOLDEN sweating the 7 on the come out sucks and this negates that - btw the actual numbers on this system are only a .029 edge for the house-I am not a crack pot who holds any hope of turning a negitive expectation into a positive one ,but I will take everything they will give me-lol

pdq is 100% correct. thumbs up from me, ten points from you. but i am going to take it one step further. did you no you can place bet "no numbers"? you can bet a $50 no 4 (or 10) by giving the dealer $51. the $1 is the vig (vigourish). if a seven comes in, you win $25. if a ten comes in, you lose. you can bet a $35 no 5 (or 9) by giving the dealer $36. if a seven comes in, you win $25. you can bet a $35 no 6 (or 8) by giving the dealer $31. if a seven comes in, you win $30. you can bet $240 no numbers across by giving the dealer $246. if a seven comes in (right away), you win $160. you can ask for your bet(s) to be taken down (returned) at any time, and you will have your vig returned to you. you can ask for your bet(s) to be "off" at any time. the difference between vig and commission (like in baccarat) is, in baccarat, if you bet on banker, you must post your commission, and if player comes in, you lose your banker bet, but not your commission. whereas in craps, you lose your vig whether you win or lose. got a headache?

you can pretty much bet on anything at all... but why would you... you are going to lose one of them and win the other... so why not put your money in the middle where it counts...
thats almost as dumb as betting on the 0 and 00 in roulette...
but its your money...
