Mostly it has to run its course. Get plenty of rest, drink plenty of water, and use a warm air humidifier. Over the counter anti- histamines and decongestants may make you feel better but read all information carefully. Throat lozenges will help. Believe it or not, chicken soup works! It will make you feel better.

The key is getting enough rest and proper hydration. Drink plenty of water and juices, apple or orange. Make sure you get a full night's sleep. If you have a cough, go to the drugstore and get a cough suppressant and an expectorant. Use the suppressant at night, and the expectorant during the day. You do it this way so that you can get a full night's sleep. Next thing you need to do is remember to keep your extremities warm. Wear socks and wool/winter gloves at all times. If you don't have gloves, put socks on your hands. It looks silly, but you will be asleep, and so will the rest of the world. Keep your extremities and chest warm.

You need to keep warm, but do not soak in a tub. Water is a very good conductor of heat, and the moment you step out of the tub, the droplets of water on your body will suck the heat back out. (Same way sweating cools your body down).

Have you seen the South Park episode when they cure SARS for the town, so the Native Americans wouldn't take the town and demolish it. They use NyQuil, Chicken Noodle Soup, and something else (I forgot). Anyway, I think Chicken Noodle Soup, and a little cough syrup, or Tylenol work fine. However, one thing that is known to work is drinking plenty of fluids, and especially orange juice. Whenever I start to feel like I'm getting a cold I drink a lot of orange juice. It works, I hardly ever actually get sick, just a minor cold every once in a while.

I've heard one shot of Jack Daniels and 8 hours of sleep is the best way to get rid of the common cold.

Squeez the juice of one lemon into half a glass of hot water. Add one teaspoon of raw honey then crush a clove of garlic into the brew. Sprinkle half a teasoon of cinnamon in while stirring vigorously. Drink before it cools down. Only your body's immune system will defeat a cold but you can relieve the symptoms
by doing this twice a day.

Here's a thought. Teach kids from the get-go to sneeze into their sleeve/under the neck of their shirts instead of into the palm of the hand; the one place to best spread germs!!!!

But if you start to get one- take echinacea right away (SP? an herb) 3 times a day for 5 days. WORKS GREAT!!
And before that never touch mucus membrane areas like eyes/ inner nose etc.,,,

Lots and lots of fluids, rest, cold medication to get rid of the symptoms. A cold is a viral infection and you can't take anything to get rid of it, just treat the symptoms.
