Martin Luther (1483-1546) is the guy that did the 95 Theses against the Catholic Church and is sometimes thought of as the founder of Protestantism. However, he didn't set out to create a new church, he wanted to reform the old one. Thus Lutheran churches didn't start popping up until the 1800s. John Wesley (founder of Methodism) was impressed with the work of Luther and started small groups which eventually led to churches in the 1700s. I'm sure that in doctrine that they are fairly similar, but you'd have to really read up on it--sometimes differences are hard to spot and perhaps its better this way. We're all Christians.
