Yup, you can fish with your own gear here in the South Island. You don't need a licence to fish in the sea, but you need one to to fish in rivers and lakes. If you're under 12 it's free. From 12 to 18 it costs $18. Over 18 it costs $92.You get one from Fish and Game or from most sports goods stores. So fishing isn't a rich man's sport like it is in some countries.

Yes you can fish, you do need a license, the fishing is great, or at least was 20 years ago when I left NZ, brilliant clear rivers, fast flowing with Brown and Rainbow trout.

I have caught trout weighing up to 10lbs. Cook one for breakfast and you will experience the best fish in the world.
