Government-issued photo ID is required to board even domestic flights for passengers 18y.o. and older (domestic flight means that it's not an international flight).

So, if you are originating in the states, then because Hawaii is a state, no, you do not need your passport unless that is the only government-issued photo ID you have. Maybe you have a driver's license that you can use instead...

By the way, you can't get there by car or by train....

I need a passport to enter Hawaii - but then again I am not American. But who would want to go to the US these days - so unfriendly

You don't need a passport. Hawaii is a US state. You just need a valid ID.
