Moses (the leader of the Israelites) had been up on Mt Sinai for a long time in the presence of God receiving the 10 commandments and various other laws, etc. The people became basically impatient and thought Moses had abandoned them so they, in all their wisdom, asked Moses' brother Aaron to "make us a god who will lead us." (Exodus 32:1) And Aaron, not the brightest bulb in the bunch that day, fashioned a golden calf made up of donated gold earrings. Then he said "behold Israel, these are your gods who brought you up out of Egypt" (Exodus 32:4). The Israelites were somewhat fickle and it didn't take much for them to turn away from their one God. Needless to say, God didn't take that little foray too well. He wanted to destroy the whole nation and start over with Moses; Moses convinced God not to nuke Israel, but they had some harsh medicine to swallow, literally. Moses melted the calf, ground it up and made the people drink it. Yuck. Long answer I know, I tend to get carried away...

The golden calf was an idol (a cult image) made for the Israelites during Moses' absence, as he went up to Mount Sinai. According to the Hebrew Bible, the calf was made by Aaron to satisfy the Israelites, whereas the Quran indicates the maker to be Samiri. In Hebrew, the incident is known as "Chet ha'Egel" or "The Sin of the Calf". It is first mentioned in Exodus 32:4 (Taha 20:83 in the Quran). In Egypt, whence the Hebrews had recently come, the Apis Bull was the comparable object of worship, which the Hebrews were reviving in the wilderness. Among the Egyptians' and Hebrews' neighbors in the Ancient Near East and in the Aegean, the Aurochs, the wild bull, was widely worshipped, often as the Lunar Bull and as the creature of El. Its Minoan manifestation survived as the Cretan Bull of Greek myth.

Moses was gone, up on the mounttain for 40 days and 40 nights. The Isrealite feared he would not return. Feeling the one true God was no longer with them they wanted something to worship.

Erected by the Israelites on several occasions, as related in the Bible and the Qur'an. Aaron made one while Moses was on Mt. Sina, which Moses later destroyed. Jeroboam placed one at Bethel and another at Dan. Hosea denounced one in Samaria. Archaeological evidence suggests that bull images functioned as representations of the gods or as bearers of them. Bull cults were widespread in Canaan at the time of the invasion of the Israelites.

Various cults related to cattle existed in Egypt, Canaan, and Mesopotamia. Egypt had the cow-goddess Hathor. Religious use of bull-calves were prominent in the area.
So it is logical that when the Israelites began to doubt God, they would try another deity they were familiar with.

THE GOLDEN CALF WAS CREATED AS AN ALTERNATE FORM OF WORSHIP FOR THE JEWISH PUBLIC AFTER MOSES WAS MEANT TO BRING WITH HIM DOWN THE MOUNTAIN THE TEACHINGS OF THE TORAH, AND THEY WANTED A MORE IMMEDIATE FORM OF GRATIFICATION.

lol - It was one of the animals they used for sacrifices, maybe they thought it was special. It does seem odd to worship a cow.
