Islam is a nationality. CAIR itself illustrates the point perfectly. As opposed to "Council of Muslim Americans" or "Council on Muslim American relations" we have a name that announces the two separate entities, that being "American-Islamic relations". Notice that? Its not "Islamic American", instead its the dichotomy of "American v. Islamic".
Furthermore, consider CAIR's description of itself - "Promotes a positive image of Islam and Muslims in America and presents an Islamic perspective on issues of public importance." http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=cair&fr=yfp-t-501&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8
"Muslims in America" as opposed to "American Muslims". Other Islamic groups demonstrate the same separatness of nationality in their name, for example "Nation of Islam". How clear is that?

We have Italian Americans, Catholic Americans, Jewish Americans, but we dont have Islamic Americans. Islam is a nationality where the loyalty is to Islam, this is why Australia just passed a new law requiring a new oath intended to deal with this exact issue.
Australia recognized the fact that most Muslims see Islam as their national identity and after a certain critical mass is achieved, are demanding that "their" laws for "their" nation be observed in the host country.
