Putting your foot in your mouth means to say something that proves you wrong or that shows how foolish you are regarding whatever it was you were talking about.

Here's an example: after repeatedly Bush / conservative / Republican - bashing on multiple occasions, I found out that my (liberal) friend's boyfriend is a Republican. I was guilty of putting my foot in my mouth.
