either he still likes you and wants you back and doesnt want any other guy to have you or he is doing this out of spite because the relationship ended on bad terms....

Since I don't know you or the "rumors" he's spreading, then I have no idea if there is any truth to them. For all I know he could just be trying to do them a favour and warn them. It's funny how people here assume that he's the bad guy and you're the good guy with nothing at all to go on.

He probably still harbors feelings about you and wants you to stay single in the hopes that you will get back with him. Try not maintain a lot of contact with him as much as possible and let the guys know that what he's doing is just because he's jealous or he's being petty. He has an issue of jealousy of the other guys. He is afraid you will leave him for one of them. Assure him that he is the one you like and the rumors will lighten up.

I think the real question is, what are you going to do? I'd contact a lawyer if I were you. Slander and assassination of character and alienation of affection are illegal, most states. He needs to be stigmatized for his little game... NOW.

I would say that it is because he is jealous. If that isnt the reason, it may just be that he really hates you, and just wants to make your life miserable. I hope thats not the case!
