My son was diagnosed ADD in 2nd grade. Not exactly the same, but close enough. We knew there was a problem, but didn't know how to address it. Academically, he was falling behind, socially uncomfortable, unable to control his emotions. Sound familiar?
Our doctor put him on Ritalin, it worked for a year or so. Then as school got harder, he fell behind again. We finally got him into a special needs class, where he blossomed. We changed his medicine to Strattera, a non-amphetimine based drug we heard is less risky.
Then, last year, I asked for a complete blood analysis , and lo and behold, he is Hypo-thyroid. The doctor says this may have been the problem all along. He is now on thyroid replacement and doing excellent. 6th grade and is taking pre-algebra courses. Sometimes doctors don't have all the answers. But you can always ask the right questions. ADHD has become a common diagnosis for alot of children. Because a lifetime of medication will be needed, I feel a second opinion is warranted - just to make sure. I appreciate your concerns about your grandson. Being educated on this subject is an excellent idea that way you can also know what to expect and how to react. If you go on line to ADHD, a lot of self-help information is provided. You can also contact your local Mental Health board and find out of any local support groups available in your area. Good Luck and God Bless You for your interest in making your grandson as comfortable as he could be while going through this transition. He is very fortunate to have people love him as much as you do!

Well first off I myself have ADHD, secondly are you the one that wants a support group? If you mean your grandson, then just talking to his family is good. ADHD cant be cured, and therapy wont cure him. Maybe he could talk to the school councilor, so that they can help him not only personally but also academically. A good thing to do is talk to his teacher so they are aware. All my teachers know and they understand.
