When he said this Thomas Edison meant that his genius was from far more hard work than any ideas he had.
Edison worked 18-20 hours a day 7 days a week. As for the perspiration comment that had to do with his lack of personal hygiene (Edison rarely bathed.) For his inspiration he looked for things that needed improvement and for things that he felt the world needed.

You have to be smart (genius) in order to do something or make something of yourself,... but if you don't have the drive (perspiration) to do what it is you have to in order to get to where you want to be, your genius is worthless. Being somebody or doing something is 99% work. You can be the smartest person in the world, but if you have done nothing with your genius, you are worth as much as someone who does not know anything.

You perspire when you work hard, , being smart is only a small part and being inspired is to only have intrest. That is the easiest.

Hello my friend,
It means that a flash of though, neat idea like say "the first lightbulb" means next to nothing without the 1000 physical attempts and thousands of hours actually spent creating it.
Also, as an artist, my ideas (although certainly not calling myself "genius") the inspiration takes about oh, 10 seconds of thoughts for an album idea, then the actual physical manifestation for it, and its videos, and its uploading into iTunes system etc.,,, take infinitely longer.
The inspiration for these works...
http://www.metacafe.com/user/3528291/marcusunlimited/
came in momentary flashes... actually composing, recording, performing etc... them took ALOT longer and ALOT more work:):):)
I hope this improves the understanding of this brilliant phrase:)
If not, let me know and I'll expand.
Best wishes,
~Marcus:)

It means that the best ideas in the world won't get anything done, but hard work and dedication to that idea is what makes something genius.

I can sit around and think of all kinds of ideas, but, if I do not act upon it to make it work through trial and error, then it useless. Like my Heated Toilet Seat idea, but, may leave it to someone else to develop.
