Try a nice muted blue. That would look very nice.

It is begging for bold. Rusty red or RED, would be fabulous. Look at the Behr color charts and see if you see something in that range that would appeal to you.
Target has these 5 by 7 rugs that have a great stripe with several of these colors, brown and reddish tan, rust and a lighter color. This would be good in front of your sofa or maybe one in the entry way or dining room.
Have fun decorating. In empty places bold colors help fill it up.
I can see a very slim sofa table along your entry wall with Buffet lamps at each end and an oval mirror between. A wooden bowl in walnut and glazed, full of pine cones in winter or fruit in summer.
I had the impression that you have no dining room furniture. Just so you have something, you can get a pair of saw horses and put a 36" wide hollow core door on them for a table. Just stain and polyurethane the door for a finished look. You can probably do the table for $50. or less. Find a door store and buy a boo boo door, if you are trying to economize. I would rather economize than buy top of the line.
For company you can use a twin sheet over it or a 3 yards of fabric would make a wonderful accent and filler to the room. Find a heavy upholstery fabric that would compliment your other colors and put it over the table. If you don't sew, they have fabric glue that you can roll a hem on each end and glue it. Then candles and a pretty arrangement will fill lots of space.
You can watch yard sales or newspaper ads for chairs that you can mix and match to go with the "dining door". It will be fun.
Enjoy, I wish I were setting up a new place.
To bad we are not close, I could give you lots of things to get started. We are selling and moving afer 30 years.

A dark brown is going to make everything seem dark and smaller. Us dark brown as an accicent ,pillows, area rugs, and accent chairs. A cream or Champaigne color will be warm but still preserve the brightness of the room. A splash of Red or burgandy, and sage green will complete your look . These colors can be incorporated in Country, formal, or rustic decor. Good luck and have fun.

Any color-but keep it light.Brown is neutral like black is.If you go too dark it will visually all blend in.An apple green or wheat color would be pretty as well as a light green-blue. Whats the look you want to have?Contemporary-Gold Bold (apple green) Vintage?-Go muted ( a creamy off white). Etc. Hope this helps
