For cross-country and track in schools, generally the shorts are made from a nylon/spandex like material that is very lightweight and flowy, very comfortable too. The length in running shorts is short because it decreases the drag and wind resistance when going fast. It takes some adjustment at first but they will make all the difference over soccer shorts or basketball shorts.
Runners generally like to show off some leg too!

It really matters what type of running shorts the coach buys for the team. I am a cross country and track coach and i know that my boys team would not like to where compression short which are the ones that stick to your body. So when i order shorts i just get the really small but loose shorts that really when you are wearing them feel almost like you are wearing nothing at all which is how it is suppose to be. compression short are good but if you don't like showing off your body they can feel a little weird so tight to your body.

Runners, male or female, like to wear 2 different designs of shorts.
The sprinters tend to wear the lycra shorts & the distance runners wear the very brief shorts with the cut up the leg.
Both are designed to provide comfort & be unnoticable when running, I have never found discomfort with either design.
Some of the more serious female like to wear running knickers- however, I wouldn't recommend these if you're a bloke!!

The first time i put on the short shorts, i felt uncomfortable. However, for a race, they are better. You look like a runner and you feel faster. The shorts also are thinner and don't absorb as much sweat which makes running easier. I wouldn't wear them anywhere else besides running, but they are essential for a race.

I wear those type of shorts because I too am a cross country runner. These shorts are more aerodynamic, and air circulates more through these shorts. They are made of a very lightweight material, so the shorts feel like they are not there, and can make you feel faster.

I run cross country. The shorts are a little awkward at first, but then they become normal. They feel a little different than regular shorts because they are lighter shorter. They aren't bad though.

The running shorts with built in bikini briefs are suppose to resemblance running naked. It feels strange at first, but once you get use to it you won't want to run in anything else.

Most of them feel just like a normal jersey, except much lighter. They are often as short as possible to allow for increased mobility.

It feels very naked but very comfortable. The reason they are short is so that they don't restrict any necessary movements.
