The Good Shepherd takes care of His sheep- that is why He refers Himself as a shepherd, and those who believe in Him and who are saved through Him are His "sheep" --He takes care of us and keeps us, and tends to us. He is our everything! He not only saves us from death- hell- but he gives us complete peace and security in Him- and fulness of JOY! The Shepherd takes care of his sheep- and we who believe are the sheep of His pasture!
To believers:
Ezekiel 34:31
You my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, are people, and I am your God, declares the Sovereign LORD.'

John 10:4
When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

John 10:27
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

-We who are saved in Jesus Christ DO hear His voice! It is the Holy Spirit living in us! And to have spiritual discernment...knowing what is God and what isn't. I love this verse:
Isaiah 30:21
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it."

This is one of the "I Am's of Jesus in the Gospel of John 10:11

What Jesus meant by this is that He is always on watch for you. He is always looking out for you, He is always available for you. A good shepherd is the reason that sheep prosper and actually flourish because they are well cared for. They are a truly timid animal and need alot of guidance in the basics of life. Psalm 23 is all about a shepherds perspective and how much attention a good shepherd gives to his flock. For example the part of I lay down beside still waters is reflective of the fact that a sheep will not drink from a bubbling stream, it is a scary thing for them. Therefore, a good shepherd brings his sheep to still waters so they can drink their fill, be satisfied and not stressed.

This is the kind of care Jesus is referring to when He describes Himself as the Good Shepherd.

Jesus often used stories to teach. The good shepherd cares about his sheep, and guides them.
In another story He talked about a shepherd who has 100 sheep. One is lost, so he leaves the others in the pen and goes out searching til he finds it, then comes in celebrating .
We are the sheep. We wander away. He won't rest until He finds us and brings us back safely to His fold.
Make sense? It did to the people He was telling it to - many of them were shepherds!

10:11 "I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep."
(King James Bible, John)

At the first advent, Christ suffered crucifixion to save the children of God from worldly and spiritual slavery.
At the second advent, He suffered over 40 years of exile and imprisonment to lead the children of the One True God to the Golden Age.

Christ was the good Shepard who laid down his life for His sheep, unlike a hired man who runs to save himself. The good Shepard is Jesus Christ, the sheep are the people of the world who He gave His life to save, and the hired men are all those that try to lead the people but not in the name of Christ.

God Bless,
Elisha

I think if you read John 10 you will see some of the things that Jesus indicated by calling himself the Good Shepherd.

The Good Shepherd
- knows his sheep
- cares for his sheep
- would die to save his sheep

Jesus knows his people intimately. He knows who belongs to him and who does not. He knows our strengths and weaknesses. He leads us where we ought to go. He knows what we need, and he provides that for us. Jesus loved us so much that he died to save us.

I hope this helps you.

A good shepherd takes care of his sheep and does not let them get hurt. A bad shepherd would not be as careful and the wolves would snatch the sheep and kill it.

Jesus is our watcher, shepherd, he takes care of us so that Satan can not snatch us from his hands.

However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. -Leviticus 25:44-46

Oh, whoops! That's the one about slavery...
