Regular exercise can make a BIG difference. It is often recommended by mental health professionals to their clients. Try it, I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the effects.

Don't try to bottle up your emotions, feelings, thoughts, issues and things that are just bothering you in general. It is amazing how much better you feel because of it; feels like an enormous weight has been lifted off of you. A close family member, spouse, partner, a friend who personally has or is close to someone who faces mental health problems, even a good friend, what's important is that they are understanding and empathetic, just an all around good person is the best choice for someone you can talk to about your personal issues.

If money is the determining factor in seeking professional help, there are many non-profit resources that are available to help people with their mental health. Are you familiar with NAMI(National Alliance for the Mentally ILL). They are a good resource for finding help.

Remember, depression is nothing to be ashamed of. It affects tens of millions in the US alone. Don't be afraid to seek help. I personally struggle with having bipolar disorder, so I am speaking out of experience. I hope that you can overcome this and find happiness. If you need any help, don't be afraid to email me, I am always happy to help. Take care, Jack of Hearts

A variety of alternative medicines have proven to be helpful in treating depression. A recent report from Great Britain emphasized that more physicians should encourage alternative treatments such as behavioral and self-help programs, supervised exercise programs, and watchful waiting before subscribing antidepressant medications for mild depression. Chocolate, coffee, sugar, and alcohol can negatively affect mood and should be avoided. Essential fatty acids may reduce depression and boost mood. Expressing thoughts and feelings in a journal is therapeutic. Aromatherapy, particularly citrus fragrance, has had a positive effect on depression. Psychotherapy or counseling is an integral component of treatment because it can find and treat the cause of the depression.
There is some evidence that acupuncture is a helpful treatment for depression too. One study found that patients who received acupuncture specific for depression were significantly less depressed than control patients who had either nonspecific acupuncture or no treatment.
St. John's wort is the most widely used. Many studies on the effectiveness of St. John's wort have been performed. One review of the studies determined that St. John's wort is superior to placebo and comparable to conventional antidepressants.

If you don't want to take medication, try therapy. If you don't have insurance or can't afford to pay, there are a lot of places that charge according to your ability to pay.

Scientific studies have shown St. John's wort to be only minimally effective, and since it is not regulated by the FDA, there is no standard to tell you how much of the active ingredient you are actually getting in the various supplements that are sold in health food stores. You can try it, but don't expect miracles.

Other "home remedies" would be positive self-talk (if you're feeling down, start thinking about all the good things in your life), exercising (even taking a short walk will release endorphins, which is the brain's "natural high"), and talking with people who care about you.

But therapy is the best way to go, if you can.

I have a child who feels the same way. How long have you felt like this? It may be a mood swing not depression if not that long. Also, hypoglycemia - low blood sugar - can cause many of the same symptoms - make sure to eat every three hours. Also B12, Omega 3, or Sam-Ecan elevate mood. There's lots of diet, meditation, suppliment things to try. Get on-line and do some research in these areas. Best of luck and PLEASE GET THE HELP YOU NEED! NO - you are not fat!

Winston Churchill suffered from depression.

The Doctor told Winston to lay 10 bricks a day on a New brick wall. That activity helped Winston with his depression.. That Gave him focus on the task and set an objective for him.

Set a Goal for your self....cut down a tree...also, a method to help depression. Exercise. Help an Infirm person cross a street.

The objective is to focus on another activity and complete the task.

Best to you.

I do suggest taking meds in addition to lots of other methods - therapy, talking to friends, starting a hobby you enjoy, exercising, meditation, prayer, journaling, volunteer work, walking the dog, etc etc. Depression is many times a biochemical disorder, and meds do help. Meds do not take away your problems, they help take that edge off of your nerves so that you can deal with your problems with a clearer head. They balance the chemical imbalance in the neurotransmitters. Meds are good.

St. John's Wort is not as effective as antidepressants, I've already asked my psychiatrist. He gets nothing out of lying to me since I go to a non-profit health organization for care (Kaiser Permanente).

Let it be and it will go away soon, assuming it isn't a serious illness.

If this doesn't work, pills may just cover it. And that's what you need.

Normal depression has a purpose. It's a natural process allowing you to evaluate and experience your problem(s).

One of the herbs exported from Chile to Germany is called "hierba San Juan" a common wild growing plant here. In Germany it is processed and sold for a fortune as an antidepressant drug. But you can just make an infusion and drink it as a tea and it costs nothing. It is commonly used here for that purpose.

Regular exercise helps to boost the seretonin "feel-good" chemicals in your brain. You'd be surprised at how much better you'll feel. Also, eating healthy by following Canada's Food Guide as best that you can will also improve your mood.
