Not only does most of the heat from the fire go up the chimney, so does a lot of your heat from your furnace.
If you want a fire, close off the room from the rest of your house, with a curtain if necessary.

Since I have known very few people who used a fireplace over the years I'd say it was because using a fireplace would be more expensive, more time consuming, dirtier, and then once a year you have to have the chimney cleaned by a sweep. On top of that there's the chance of a spark and your house going up in flames, which definitely would be costly.

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but I just found out that if you light a fire in your home, though it may quickly heat up the air near the fireplace itself, it will cause the temperature in the rooms further away from the fireplace to drop by a few degrees. So lighting a fire might not help as much as you think.

I prefer the thermostat ,but it doesn't make any difference if u can get the fact that CO2 is not a pollutant. For several million years mother nature has recycled our air which removes the CO2 and gives us back oxygen. The plants need CO2 just as much as u need oxygen. Where do u think all the fossil fuels came from.
