It was done hundreds of years ago, to get out the "infected blood". The commerical is a jab at the fact that idiots will follow any thing to avoid social castigation-which our society assures us is worse than giving up your pride, or doing the right or sensible thing.

-noun
Stands for Sticking Leeches On Myself (SLOM)
A series of decisions that sucks the life out of a person.

- verb
To engage in an activity without thinking.
To make a decision based on wannabeitis.

Example: Those who engage in SLOMming often fear not fitting in or simply enjoy being a sheep in the flock of life. Notable sheep have included: fans of White Snake, people that wear parachute pants, and that 20-year-old guy who still hangs out at all the high school parties.

While SLOMming isn't "really" going on, some people do get sucked into the influence of peer pressure. Of course, most people make good decisions most of the time and are able to step back and avoid sticky situations. Others rely on the crowd to direct them. They do things they'd rather not, and even convince themselves that it's all good.

But, it was used way back, to get infection out of blood.

Not me...Leeches are good for fishing...they were used often in holistic medicine and even modern medicine (to create blood-flow in reattached appendages)...the soliva has a blood thinning property...so there may be something to this thing, but I still prefer to use leeches as bass bait.
