my friend i have heard a Boston Acoustics 12" G5 next to a JL 12w6, and i can honestly tell you the Boston sounded better. it was not louder, but it sounded better. very accurate, very deep, very very clear. the W6 is the "SQ" subwoofer for JL, and the Bostons sound better. there only $400, $200 on ebay, and there RMS is only 450 watts. which means you dont need a huge amp to power them. i highly highly recomend checking them out before you buy anything else. there the best woofer i have ever heard in my life. i own 2 of them have had them for 2 years, and am yet to hear anything better.
hope this helps.

Most high end subwoofer manufacturers have their expensive competition style woofers, but most of their cheaper woofers have great sound quality. If you're looking for some good low end, try Mass Destruction, Digital Designs, RE Audio, Fi Car Audio, Hifonics, Treo Engineering, just to name a few. Any other comparable high end manufacturers will make great sounding woofers. Most people who consider JL Audio woofers as some of the loudest and best sounding around haven't heard *real* high end woofers. Very few competitors actually win (or place) in SPL and/or SQ events with JL woofers (with exception to their w7 line, which is highly overpriced but loud as heck).

i like the JL Audio amps. Even the JL Audio TMA amps have distinctive ability. I disagree with the any amp that suits impedance remark. it somewhat is incorrect. My sought after amps ever are the previous college Orion HCCA amplifiers. look on ebay for a used 2100 HCCA Orion purple amplifier or a pair of 250 HCCA amps. those amps will blow out any amps ever outfitted. Alpine additionally has an amplifier that runs the bass sales area they have with sixteen 12" woofers. i think of the kind is the MRP-M2000. That amp is enormously surprising additionally.

try some KICKER compvr or the L5 and L7 series(the square subs) these aren't that expensive compared to JL. Go to Circuit City and hear their setups. They let you try them out in your car with their amps to give you a taste of what it sounds like.

I like my Infinity Reference...
Modest price, Great sound.
Use a sealed enclosure with a volume equal to the manufacturer's specified volume for the speaker. You will be happy.
