Really the only thing you have to risk is your future... do you have a chance to go to college? do you have an idea of a carreer that you really want to do?
I enlisted in 2003... I deployed to Iraq in 2004-2005... my wife is currently deployed to Iraq until Aug 07.... I had always wanted to go to college but didn't know what for... I joined and got a wide variety of life experiences and work experience under my belt... Now I'm about to graduate from college in a year and I have a carreer and goals... Plus I met my wife in the Army...
I'm not going to say that you should join.. but there are certain things you can't get anywhere else... if I had a chance to go back in time and change my choice to go in the Army... I would still join... it was some of the best times of my life... and there are hundreds of thousands of people that can attest to that...
I will say this though.. don't get duped... find a job you really want.. the sign on bonus should never be a reason to pick a job... and since you are doing research... talk to the recruiter about giving you an extra rank since you are "recruiting" your buddy for him... you can get up to e-3 before signing up without college credits... ask...

Its not for everyone. Basic is tough. Especially Infantry Basic(Fort Benning GA.). Far tougher than Fort (Slackson) Jackson. I recommend it though if you are in good shape. Join and give it a go. Serving your country as a U.S. Infantry Soldier will make you a stud and a man. Something our youth really need right now. Too many whiny cowards out there. I believe you got the guts it takes to do it. Don't listen to these college bound sissies. You WILL be the real deal. And when you come home wearing that 101st Airborne Patch and a chest full of medals as my son did in Iraq, then you will get respect like you wouldn't believe. Join the 101st and be the "first to fight" (behind) enemy lines... Gen. Franks said it best to his troops and I quote " Men, when you get home and you see an anti-war protestor, shake his hand and wink at his girlfriend. Cause she knows she's dating a sissy".

what besides going to war? you need to look further into what branch of the military you really want to join. what can they offer you also. It's great that people want to serve our country and everything but don't be gung-ho about it. all branches can do great things for you. Research them before you jump into one. I am in the Army, they are doing great things for me, but I've seen a lot of young men and women realize that the army wasn't for them but it was too late. Think about it.
