I've been dating a guy for almost 3 months exclusively (and I know he's not seeing anybody else). I'm debating about getting him a gift for the holidays. Is it too soon?

Thanks!

Not if you feel moved to give him something! That's what the holidays are really all about -- spontaneous expressions of fondness towards those who fill our lives with meaning, with delight and with joy.

Now, what to get him? Three months is too soon for a really BIG gift, like a new Ferrari or a house in the Grand Caymans (though I'm sure they'd be appreciated -- I know I'd like either one! :-), but it would be VERY sweet to get him something. Nothing practical... nothing you've heard him say he wants... something whimsical, maybe even a little intimate -- not necessarily sexually intimate, but something that will make him think only of you when he looks at it.

See, at three months, your relationship could go any number of ways. You could realize in February that you're really just not meant for each other, shake hands, and part as friends. (Let's not even discuss anything less pleasant, I hate even to consider the idea of a messy breakup.) Or you could both come to the mutual understanding that This Is The Big One, and the gift will take on sentimental significance.

A charming, lighthearted, yet personal gift works in either scenario.

...And I thought of just the thing -- while you say "the holidays," does he celebrate Christmas? If so, and if he has a tree, get him an ornament with the date on it. It's gotta cost around $5, so if you guys shake hands and go your separate ways in another two weeks, it's no big loss.

I bought one of these for my girlfriend in 1978, our first Christmas as a couple (though we'd been friends for years). She had a tree in her apartment and I thought it would be nice to have an ornament with the date on it.

We put it on the tree last night. It's become a treasure -- even more than the one from 1979, the year we got married.

We have other dated ornaments, and they're nice to have in general. But if this ends up being your first of many holidays together, that gift will become something you'll both cherish.

All the best!

SURE WHY NOT? HE'S SOME ONE TOO AND HE'S PROBABLY LOOKING FOR ONE JUST TO SEE IF U EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT HIM AND IT MATTERS NOT WHAT IT IS IF U KNOW IN YOUR HEART THAT HE'S REALLY CARING AND DOWN TO EARTH THEN TO HIM IT'LL BE THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS

Yes, but nothing too romantic. Be careful with what you purchase.
