I have an 11 month old male Siberian Husky who is very playful, jumpy, and very happy. This past weekend he hasn't been the same, he was throwing this past Sunday about 6 times. I took him to the vet to see what was wrong with him but they said he was fine. No signs of pain, fever or soreness around the stomach area. The vet gave medication for him which are Sucralfate (1gm) and Cephalexin (500mg) and said if he keeps vomiting take him back in. He hasn't since Sunday but now I am concerned about him not eating, he will drink but only a little and when I try to give him food he resists it. I tried everything, but he won't eat any food I give him. I am starting to worry about him. Is this normal? It's been 3 days and he hasn't eaten anything except the pills we have been giving him. I'm desperate! A little advice please.

Usually you need to give Sucralfate 30 minutes before other meds and food because it can cause upset stomachs. If you are feeding him and giving him both pills at the same time, try spacing the sucralfate out 30 mins. before, then give him the Keflex and food. If that doesn't help I would take him back to the vet and ask for different meds that will keeping him from vomiting and that wont effect his eating (such as Meaclopramide possibly). Also when you feed him you might try dressing just a little bit of baby food on top of his normal food. That would sometimes work for pick eaters at my old clinic. Good luck

Yes, you should let them sort it themselves. If you try and interfere, you could make things worse for the submissive dog. Having two females together, the best you can hope for, is no contest from the older dog, to keep things peaceful. Most times, it's recommended to pair dogs of opposite sex for this reason. That's not to say its not a workable situation, but it may be more challenging then if you had a male and a female. Be sure and spend lots of time with the older female one on one. When in the presence of both dogs, always acknowledge the dominant dog first and give that dog preference. I know, it sounds unfair, but believe me, you'll be doing the older dog a favour. When you give attention to the submissive dog first, or you punish the dominant dog infront of the submissive, the alpha will feel it is necessary to PROOVE to everyone they are the alpha, that's when fights break out. Don't feel bad about it, the momma doesn't! It's their way of doing things, and unlike humans, dogs don't go around feeling sorry for themselves, wishing for what once was, what might've been. They live in the moment. It's just the way they do things. I would however feed the older dog separately, so you can be sure she is getting all she needs nutritionally. DO NOT ATTEMPT A SUBMISSION ROLL (as suggested by previous poster) They are far too powerful a breed, and that particular technique should only be practiced by experienced professionals. You could get seriously hurt and do more damage then good.

If your dog has stopped throwing up and is drinking enough water to stay hydrated, the dog will be okay. It'll eat when he's hungry. Staying hydrated is the main issue..like humans dogs can go for weeks as long as they're hydrated though they may have hunger pains. If he only recently got over the throwing up I would suggest only for times like these a simple bowl of rice, maybe some bland home cooked plain chicken mixed in to encourage him to eat and get his strength up.

He'll eat the pills but not the food?

Try mixing in other goodies in his food (wet, cottage cheese, chicken broth etc). Or switch type of food.

And don't worry so much that he hasn't eaten in three days... especially if he is still playful and otherwise normal and not losing a ton of weight... he will eat if he is hungry...

Try hand-feeding him very small amounts to see if he'll take them. Don't push him, either. You could cause him stress if he s still not feeling well. He is still a puppy, so he is just like a small child.

Better call the vet to see what they want you to do.
