Nothing. He's just a man. Not any better, nor any worse than any of the rest of us. He's given artificial authority by a church which has long ago lost its credibility.

The same thing that makes one of us a President or a Doctor. The Pope is a theologian well educated, and then selected by the Roman Curia. Cardinal Ratzinger was selected to become Pope Benedict the XVI there are many Saints that are closer to God then some of us are. We can work on building our relationship with God our creator and become holy and closer to God

The presence of the Holy Spirit is what makes anyone holy. The Pope is more holy than some people but not holier than others.
However the Pope through his ordination like other priests and bishops has received the Holy Spirit in way different from lay people.
Matthew 16:17-19 states:
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
Modern Popes are selected for the role by the power of the Holy Spirit through the election by the cardinals of the Church who pray for guidance and wisdom before voting for Pope.
The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.
With love in Christ.

He has been chosen to be Head of the Catholic Church. I believe that it doesn't make him holier. It puts him in a position of responsibility to lead a Godly life, so that others have a good example to follow. His relationship with God is between him and God.

All human being are in need of salvation, including the pope. However, he is a Godly man, I am sure he has spent years being faithful to God in all his actions and prayers. God places people in all kinds of positions of power by the circumstances of their lives.I am not a Roman Catholic so I apologize to any RCs who are offend by my first sentence, but that is how Protestants think.

Really it's the direct line of succession. Benedict the 16th. is the 263 Pope....And of course Jesus Christ subscribed to the principle of leadership and put a lot of work into St. Peter; an extraordinarily human person, far more beautiful than St. Paul in terms of his struggle and humanity.

The Pope is in direct succesion from St. Peter. I told St. Peter, 'you are the rock, and upon this rock I will build my church". The Pope is just a man like everyone else. Yes he wears flowing robes and his hat represents him being a shepherd watching over his flock. Remember, is "no better" than anyone one else in my eyes, however, he is my Vicar on earth and represents me and my church and the one true Lord God. He is a blessed man whom I am very pleased with. To my Muslim friend I say, put away your hatred and learn to love those around you. This is my message of peace to this troubled world.

Isayah 65:2-5—
2 I have spread out My hands all the day to a rebellious people, who walk in a way which is not right, after their own thoughts; devices;
3 A people who act defiantly against Me continually to My face; who sacrifice in gardens, and burn incense on altars of brick;
4 Who assemble and spend the night keeping memorials for the dead, who eat swine's flesh, and the broth of abominable things; unclean foods, is in their vessels,
5 Who say; Stand by yourself! Do not come near me, for I AM HOLIER THAN YOU!! These are a smoke in My nostrils, a fire that burns all the day.
Isayah 66:17—
They who sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens, following after the priest in the midst of those who eat swine's flesh, that which is offered to gods (elohim) and the rodent__will be consumed together: says Yahweh.
