Ruby throated hummingbirds nest in a tree or scrub, USUALLY at a height between 10-20 ft., but the nests can range between 5-50 ft. up. They tend to nest on a fork of a downward sloping twig, and will often nest near or over water. It is actually illegal to possess nests or feathers or any part of a bird without a collection permit. Since it is not breeding season for these birds (March-June) many of the nests may have fallen apart or fallen down by now, but luckily there is no chance of disturbing a nesting pair. Never attempt to collect nests during breeding season under any circumstances. Maybe you should get your mom a really pretty hummingbird book, there are some really nice ones with great pictures of the birds and their nests. If she does not already have a hummingbird feeder, get her one. Maybe find a great photo of a hummingbird nest and get it framed for her. Good Luck.

I hate to tell you this, but its a Federal crime to possess any birds nest in the United States, other than a non-native bird or a legally hunted bird. This may seem a bit over the top, but it is a very important law that keeps people from disturbing nesting birds, thus protecting their young. I would suggest getting your mom a nice hummingbird picture or statue, or maybe a nice hummingbird feeder. Sorry to dissappoint you and your mom.

This is going to prove to be quite a mission I suspect. Hummingbirds nests can be found in any number of places, because their nests are tiny. They mostly use trees, no one tree in particular, but can also be found in odd places such as porch lights, wind chimes, etc., etc. Check out some sites on hummingbirds, they may provide you some info to make the hunt a little easier.
Good luck!

Hummingbird nests are very small and very hard to see. I went on a river trip in a canoe and there were some there in the trees along the shore. You really have to know what you are looking for though or you will miss them.

I have seen hummingbird nests on the end of ropes. Hummingbirds will build a nest anywhere they feel they are safe.

PLEASE don't. As a bird rehabilator, at least in my state it is illegal to take the nest of any bird, even if they are done using it, due to possible disease transmission and not knowing at nesting time if the nestlings are fully fledged. If you truly appreciate bird life please respect their habitat. Therefore I won't be the one to tell you where to find a hummingbird nest.

They usually make their nests in very tall trees. They're probably too high up for you to get to.

Oh, and as someone else already mentioned, it's illegal.
