In my daughter's trunk, she has several of the fairy tale princess dresses that I picked up in the doll section at Wal-Mart, costume jewelry from the dollar store, MUST HAVE crowns or tiaras or hats with feathers on them, a boa or two, and light pink or purple eye shadows and blushes and lipstick that are soft little girl colors (get real makeup, the play make up is really bad for their skin and can cause bad eye irritations) the barbie cell phone-purse combo thing or something like it, and sparkly shoes. Magic wands are nice too. We've also included cast off Halloween costumes from friends, and a few from Ebay, so she's ready for anything.

Hats and shoes! Those were always my favorites. Scarves of all shapes, colors, and sizes can be used in a myriad of ways and will encourage creative pretend play. Also, include lots of safe costume jewelry so she can mix and match. Any old Halloween costumes you can find would also work wonderfully. Make sure she has access to a full length mirror, too! What good would all those fun things do if she couldn't see herself in them!

I would include costumes like a nurse, policeman, baker, firefighter, doctor, animals, dresses, shoes, hats from different cultures etc. You probably don't want her main focus to be on princess (beauty) items. I think it is okay for girls to be princesses but it doesn't get their imagination prepared for the world. Make belief and fantasy are great but it is wonderful for girls to have that (help people attitude) rather than the (look how pretty I can be) attitude. Anyways that is what I think.

I think accessories more than the clothes themselves.Things like a hard hat for a builder, stethoscope for a doctor, camera for a photographer, apron and utensils for a cook/chef, towel and one of those swimming caps the lifeguards wear to be a lifeguard. The list goes on and on. The things you need shouldn't be too expensive to buy. Have fun!!

Any of your old clothes..all the kids I have babysat love to dress up in mommy's/grandma's old clothes, it makes them feel grown up, plus its really cheap!
It depends on where her interests are...if she likes to dance, then ballerina costumes and shoes, if she likes Disney Princesses or any Disney characters, the Disney store has amazing costumes, though they are a bit pricey. Be creative, and you'll be impressed with what she'll come up with!

i would include things such as:
hats: cowgirl hat, chefs hat, magicians hat, baseball cap, a tiara, clowns wig, winter hat, visor, firemans hat, nurses hat, hard hat, etc.
accessories: costume jewelry, belts, feather boas, clip on ties, headbands, dressy gloves, winter gloves, sunglasses, wands, fairy wings, etc.
variety of pocket books, wallets, books bags, play luggage, briefcase, etc.
bridesmaid style fancy dresses, old halloween costumes, an apron, leotards, bathing suits, leg warmers, shawls, tutus, earmuffs, scarves
in my preschool classroom the dress up center is the most popular center by far. we rotate things in and out according to the seasons. during the summer i add things such as empty sunblock bottles, light weight beach chairs, a small cooler, tank tops, flip flops, sandals, life guard whistle, cover ups, beach towels, sundesses, shorts
in the fall i put out a lot more of the actual costumes, not just bits and pieces of them. i put the complete princess costumes, clown costume - with sequence pants, i'll also add hooded sweatshirts, old light weight sweaters and blazers, socks (which they love to switch over and over), cat costume - ears and a tail and black turntle necks. i also put in flannel shirts and overalls and a farmers type straw hat and lots of bandanas. i put a long white apron i had made for the pilgrims and some long dresses (old adult shirts), we have mocassins and then pilgrim hats and a pocahontas outfit that is included.
in the winter i add in snow suits, boots, scarves, ear muffs, gloves, mittens, sweaters, tights, leg warmers, santa hat, those white fur coats that were popular years ago for little girls. i put out dressier shoes - lots of high heels so they can all dressed up for christmas and to go christmas shopping. they sell a lot of the clothes, they bag and rebag and restock and bag again.
so to start off i would say, high heels, princess dress, jewelry, ballerina tutu, apron, a selection of purses, dressy gloves, and lots of hats!
have fun! SD
