The Cuban-American lobby is against any dealings with Castro. Both parties court the Cuban vote. Vietnamese Americans lack the political clout that the Cubans have. So that is why we deal with Vietnam.

Because Viet Nam wanted a relationship and Cuba does not.

Lack of political courage. If we can deal with Vietnam or even more, with Red China, we ought to be able to open up to Cuba. American influence (read: dollars) would change Cuba overnight but the mere mention of loosening of the embargo scares the politicians to death. We even recognize Lybia? Go figure. Opening up Cuba would free the Cuban people. It's goning to happen soon; it should have happened years ago.

Because Vietnam is making reforms in humanitarian rights and is opening up to UN monitoring. Not that I'm a fan of the UN. Also Vietnam has stuck out an olive branch to the west, as to where Cuba has done the opposite.

Cuban ex-patriots living in Florida still hold claims to land they left in Cuba. They worry that if the US normalizes relations with Cuba that they will loose their claims. That plus Castro allowing the Soviets to base, or start to base, nuke missles there.

The easy answer- US presidents and other shifty businessmen in the USA screwed with Cuba and Fidel got mad. With Vietnam, they bombed the crap out of them, and feel sorry for them.

It's called tradition.

No president since the death of Kennedy will deal with them.

And no president wants to be the 'first' to go soft on them.
