We have this saying where I live (Don't Mess With Texas). Its on the government logos, some law enforcement stuff, and boy do they mean it, but when it comes to parking at a broken meter, all you have to do is call the parking enforcement number that's on the back of the meter (the hours are usually between the times that the meters are enforced) and tell the dispatcher that the meter is broken. They will give you an incident number and if you lost money in the broken meter, they are supposed to mail you that money back (I have yet to receive that though, so I guess I got messed with). Anyway, in Texas, you will not get a ticket.

Shouldn't do, leave a note on meter or on car saying that it is broken. If a ticket is still issued then fight it, call the council (or police, or parking inspectors etc) up then and there and report the broken meter and if need be tell them to come and view it straight away.

Not in Los Angeles County. The meters are electronic & when they don't work, all you do is tie a bag over the meter so that the Parking Enforcement people make a note & can have it fixed ASAP. The bag alerts them to the simple fact that the meter IS broken & they will then get out of their cars & tag & bag it with the official fix-it bag & everybody parks for free!!! Happy-happy Joy-joy.

Depends on the mood of the parking patrol dude or dudette. In my town, if the meter's broke you can stick a note in the coin slot and most (..not all) of the parking patrol people will test the meter. If it's truly broke, you don't get a ticket.

In Kansas City I know for sure they won't give you a ticket if you park at a broken meter.. can't speak for other areas but I would assume they are the same

The ones here have green if there is time left, red if no time left and yellow if it is not working.

There should be a phone number on the parking meter somewhere, you have to call that number tell them that the meter its broken, they will give you a number, keep it with you just in case you do get a fine. If you do get a fine just call them back with that number and you won't have to pay it. Cheers

Yup. Never try to cheat the government out of a quarter.

I would say yes, unless the meter has some type of cover on it saying that no payment is needed.

Yes. You could fight it, but you would have to prove that it did not accept quarters at that time.
