its generally either a silver band or a silver band with a small diamond in it. it could be anything though as long as you state you are making a promise, girls dont care about that sorta stuff.

Rings that are actually advertised in stores as "promise rings" usually have a small chip of a diamond or some birthstone in it somewhere, but if you both like a different style of jewelry, or a particular type of ring hold some sort of deeper meaning for you (like a mood ring or something), then anything can be used as a promise ring.

Depending on where you plan to purchase the ring they will have a special ring called a promise ring. Otherwise it is the ring you think she will like and accept.

Billy, you know that the object isn't as important as the idea. A piece of twisted paper is as meaningful as a diamond ring. What's important is how it is presented. Your partner might ask for something else...and if so, ask why something that you chose (such as the twisted paper) isn't significant? Your choice is important in the expression, not the thing. If you give a piece of wood, with heartfelt intentions, that's more important than a diamond. If you were to give a diamond as a casual, "here, take this", with no real meaning behind the gift...what do you think it would mean?

A promise ring is usually a "miniature" or smaller stoned engagement ring, with a stone of less than a quarter karat.

Any ring will work. Sometimes they have diamonds in them, but a lot smaller than you would buy for an engagement ring.

pretty much any ring. but it's usually a plain silver or gold band, usually with a small diamond. but i think any ring will do, as long as you tell her it's a promise ring.

You know something it is not the ring that matters, it is the sentiment behind it. If you two are in love any old thing should do...
