Take the class. It is perfectly acceptable in wine tasting to take the wine in your mouth to taste it, then spit it out. They have special containers available for that. If you still have a reaction then definately see a doctor.

Some people have a natural sensitivity to the sulfites found in most wines. It is actually quite common so there are wineries out there that make wine that does not contain sulfites. It should say right on the label that the wine "contains no sulfites" or "sulfite free". Go check it out. I think you may find that this helps a great deal. Good luck!

Have you mentioned this to your doctor? You could be allergic to the sulfites in the wine -most likely- but you could also have some underlying problem with your liver or something other serious issue. In any case, I would not drink wine at all and would look for something else to do.

You might be allergic to sulfites if a little bit of wine affects you that badly. The most common reaction is headache.

p.s. in wine tasting, it is perfectly acceptable to swirl the wine around your mouth and then spit it out, but if you are genuinely allergic you'd better stay away from the wine class!

some friends use to have a soup (salty one),before starting to drink;,to counteracts those after-drinking effects, they say it really works,
you can do the same, since that's a knowledge wine class, you can smell, but you don't have to drink at all,you can spit it,or you can tell the teacher your concern to see if there are other options
for you, since you are so interested in the class, other wise move to another elective,if nothing can be done for you,

maybe you're allergic to the Sulfites that are added to the wine?

Try an Organic wine where no added sulfites are allowed.
Another term to look for is "biodynamic" wines.. a method of organic gardening.

However, watchout for wines that say "made from organic grapes" since the USDA allows the use of sulfites for that labeling.

As to what you can do to get over it?
It's difficult to prevent your body from reacting if you are allergic.
