Beer has very little sugar, mostly carbs, but your body will process it as a fat. Wine has natural sugar from the grapes.. this includes sparkling wines. Any hard liquor is just plain bad for you. Being that you've never drank before, none of these will taste good to you. You can try:

Beer: Blue Moon (light) New Castle (med/dark) Guinness (very dark.. with balls)

Wine: Robert Mondovi or Rodney Strong for a good Cabernet or Merlot. Mumms Sparkling Wine (good and not too expensive.)

Most hard alcohols (Vodka, Gin, Tequila, etc) don't add sugar - however, they may contain carbohydrates and calories. It's the Liqueuers that add sugars (think Bailey's, Schnapps, Kahlua, etc). The exception is rum, which is usually processed directly from sugar cane, but unflavoured rum is NOT sweet.

Wine is made from grapes, which contain fructose, a type of sugar. Most real wines (not Arbor Mist and Boone's) don't add flavouring or sugar.

You could try vodka with club soda. Tastes better with a squeeze of lemon or lime. No sugar, and very little calories.

I would think dry white wine or light beer would have less sugar/calories.
