She is 7 months old now, and I still haven't introduced gluten or wheat. Should I just try it and see if there is a reaction, or should I wait until she's a bit older?

There is a 1 in 20 risk for a first degree relative to develop Celiac. There is no need to ever introduce gluten to her diet if you don't choose to. My entire family is gluten free. The gluten free diet is much healthier than a wheat-filled diet if you're not using expensive replacement products. For her grain intake you could try introducing rice cereal, millet, buckwheat, and quinoa. Those are all safe grains for a Celiac. Of course, you will want to consult your pediatrician before introducing any grains due to her family history. If you're really concerned about it, you could get the gene test through www.Enterolab.com.

Also, on a side note, there's an excellent Celiac message board at www.Celiac.com (www.glutenfreeforum.com). Feel free to ask your question there as well.

You have a 5-10% chance of getting celiac disease if someone in your family has it. It's common in people from the northern European countries and the United States. How common? We think that about one in every 133 people has celiac disease in the United States. Obviously, many people who have celiac disease do not know it. If all these people were diagnosed, celiac disease would be more common than Type 1 diabetes. Fortunately, awareness is growing about the problem, and there are better ways of testing people for it.

There is no need to introduce gluten & wheat products to a 7 month old, especially if you are concerned with how they might tolerate it. Stick with rice & soy products for now and discuss this with your child's pediatrician at her next well baby check-up.
