Yes. God was made by man, in our image. People are scared of death and want to believe there's something more. Of course, I can't be 100% sure that there is absolutely no god, but I'm confident with my 99%.

I love this question. Of all the technical ones I find on Yahoo! and of all the questions like it here - yours cuts straight and simply to the point.

Let me begin by saying that I am a person about fact. I love mathematics and science. I am a believer of proof and hard physical data. Without sound information and support - I believe that any claim is pretty useless.

However, I believe in God.

Why?

Because God is about faith. It's about believing in something unprovable. Why do I do this? Espescially after I am so compelled to insist on nothing but proof? Because not only does the idea of God comfort me - it actually makes true rational sense.

Belief in God is the ultimate in human existance. Other animals on this planet do not attend churches nor do they bow their heads in prayer. Belief in God keeps me humble - it also empowers me.

Humble in that my beliefs (and actions) are centered around peace and good will. It also gives me a higher authority to answer to despite the presence of a legal system or physical witnesses to any wrong doing I might do.

It empowers me to believe that the Universe and all things are not left to chance and that I may have some importance in this world and can make a difference to others. I also believe, by the word of God, that I have dominion over certain things in this world and that I have been given the responsibility to use some wisdom when dealing with those things.

Is there scientific proof to this? Not a shred. But it's this same lack of proof that so many who say that there is no God like to swing around like a dead cat everytime this topic comes up. These same people are also very prideful and defensive about the subject. Ironically, while my argument requires no proof - there's certainly seems to need defense.

I also find it very interesting that agnostic and atheist alike will "Swear to God" when pushed.

You see, in my "proof requiring" mind - I find much beauty in God. Each new scientific discovery or each new mathematical formula doesn't make me swell with pride over my species... Instead, I put that new knowledge in my mind (I am truly fascinated that my mind is vastly more advanced than even our nearest cousin in "evolution") as I marvel at the infinitely complex and majestic beauty that is the universe that God crafted.

My Bible and my Physics books are both happy on my nightstand.

As for your question - I must carefully answer:

Is God an invention of man? Most certainly.

Is God JUST an invention of man? No my friend - in an infinite universe, with infinite possibilities? Not a chance.

Great question!!!

Man is like a slug in the face of God. So how could such a low thing invent God. Who is there that can ask God "what are you doing, or why did you do that." So, maybe man made the universe and himself and the billions of things that exist? No, man has not done any of that, and if he did not why do some people believe that these things made themselves? The creator must be greater than that which he creates. And so, who can be greater than God or event Him. Only Satan could come up with such wickedness....KECK

God isn't an invention, but he is an idea created by man. Just take a look around. When a believer needs proof of gods existence he just quotes a passage from his holy text. Which, as it happens, was written by mortal men who never did end up chatting with god themselves.

We invent Gods in our own image in order to relate to something far beyond our limited comprehension. What I call God, and what a Christian calls God - are two VERY different things. It's because our perceptions of the divine source are completely different. What some people call God, others call science or something unexplained as of yet, but not necessarily supernatural. So yes - God is an invention we all interperate differently.
