The AFQT portion of the ASVAB is broken into 6 categories. 1, 2, 3A, 3B, 4 and 5. Categories 4 and 5 or not considered passing.
Categories 1, 2, and 3A are considered the "upper mental groups." These we normally call "Alphas." The Category 3B we normally call "Bravos." The DOD requires roughly 70% of new enlistees to be alphas.
So an AFQT of 50 or greater is considered a good score by DOD standards.

a "good" score? I'd say 80 or higher.

Although I must say it really depends on what MOS you want. Your score will do nothing other than let you know what jobs you are qualified to take in the military. Some of the higher tech jobs require an asvab of 95+ . So if you know what you wanna do before you sign up find out what Asvab score is needed.

Did you Pass? If you Pass and they allow you to enlist, its a good score.

Remember, the ASVAB does not tell you how smart you are. The ASVAB is an aptitude test which will tell the Navy what you are good at doing. What you are capable of learning. Its used for Job placement.

So, you don't pass or fail an ASVAB - you either Qualify for that branch of the Military or you dont Qualify.

The minimum to enter the military varies with the branch (most are around 35) The maximum score is 99.
The "raw" score is not the only criteria used to determine rate (job) eligibility. The test is broken down into things like spacial concepts, mathmatical, writen. (not entirely unlike ACT/SAT just easier).
One piece of knowledge you should have is that if you do score well they will try to talk you into their "need" rate. For example when I entered I scored a 99. I was told I qualified for only EW tech. or Nuke.... Only later did I find out the reality.
An odd little fact: the easiest rate to qualify people with low scores for is Dental Tech. Makes you worry!

Don't remember the total score, but if you score above the 80-85th percentile on most of the subjects then you can do pretty much what you want in any branch of the military

You want a lower number. If my memory from thirty years ago serve me rightly.

If your score was 56, it means that 56% of those who took the same test scored better than you did. If your score was 3, it meant that only 3% of those who took the same test scored better than you did.

I would talk to your recruiter to know more about it. Things are in a constant state of flux these days in the Military. They may do things completely different now.
