If you really care about the environment, you have to go vegetarian. Meat production causes extensive pollution and is a huge drain on our resources. It even causes more pollution than these SUVs people always complain about. It is also easy to become meat free and much kinder to animals. Meat is no longer needed as a food source as many other kinder options exist. In fact, most meat sold today is in the form of stuff like hamburgers and hot dogs and is bad for your health. The only real reason to eat meat is for entertainment and the animals pay the price for our entertainment as they are abused and slaughtered. It is hypocritical to say you care about the environment and love animals while eating meat.

No, quite the contrary.

Having empathy for our fellow humans only helps to increase the number of us here on this planet. It is in our very nature to assist the others of our species to increase our population as much as possible. Survival of the fittes does not necessarily mean survival of the smartest, or prettiest, or the hardest working...The fittest may very likely be those of us who are willing to expand the species as a whole.

Moral, compassionate decisions help us in the long term. Abrupt, brutal decisions hurt us both in the short term, as well as the long term.

No. Absolutely not. We are a very advanced species with great power. Most of us do not leave in kill or be killed environments....only then would Social Darwinism occur. Empathy helps our species thrive...it's the natural evolution of our species. We take care of each other, more of us survive, breed...so on.

We are in no way in danger of extinction as a species currently, so the question is almost null and void. "Moral" or compassionate decisions help us keep order to our society, which is beneficial.

Do not forget that many other species exhibit altruistic characteristics that our human empathy may have been derived from.

Empathy is instinctual to a degree when resources are plentiful.

It would appear that most decisions made by humans are those that are selfish by nature. Being a relatively young species, of course, decisions as this ensure our survivial. What is interesting is that as we mature, we include more groups of people and even other species in our circle of selfishness, which may either undermine our survival or be that which allows us to survive.

It is interesting to speculate what may happen. I think one could argue it both ways.

I think people by nature (as adults) are selfish. We only do what we want to do. Whether it's moral or brutal. But yes, everyone, even you will protect your own survival. Just a matter of how far we're willing to go.

Our species will fail if we are not empathetic. Human conflict will be our downfall, not the other way around.
