it means lincoln didn't think much of a man who didn't learn day by day, both from experience and by actively seeking knowledge
during lincoln's time, a lot of people, even hard larbourers, spent their free time reading and educating themselves.
ever heard this quotation from lincoln?:
I am sorry mother, but I was unwell last night. The dinner was served on time and I was very hungry, but the porter put his hand on my plate and it turned my stomach so that I could not eat a bit of it. He was not wearing any gloves, and the sight of that dirty black digit so close to the gravy was appalling.
this is a paraphrased excerpt from lincoln's diary, a letter written to his mother while travelling on a campaign train; lincoln, the great emancipator! lord, love a duck!

Yes, it is by Lincoln however the quote is not correct.
Most all those "quote sites" have flaws.
It was in one of the most important speches in US history: A House Divided
"A house divided against itself cannot stand."
by Abraham Lincoln
June 16, 1858
State Republican Convention
"Senator Douglas holds, we know, that a man may rightfully be wiser today than he was yesterday-that he may rightfully | change when he finds himself wrong." A. L.
So we see Lincoln answers your question about his famous quote! If you read the next lines Lincoln does not agree with the quote.
Thanks for putting this quote out for all. It is important. If you are a student, well your teacher will be most impressed.
