Im staying at a hotel nearby airport. I dont want to rent a car for 2 days. How can I get around DC and Dulles Airport without breaking the bank? Is there a tram, trolley, shuttle to and fro or what? Thank you very much!

I recently came back from DC over the Thanksgiving Holidays and traveled to see the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. I took Matthew my 10 year old nephew. We found that traveling the Metro for about a buck eighty five was the best way to get around just about anywhere in the DC area

Staying out by Dulles sort of stinks - does your hotel offer a shuttle to the Metro.
Metro will be your best bet for getting into and around the city. There's also a bus that will take you from Dulles to the West Falls Church Metro, but it's $8 or $9 one way. Depending on where you're staying, you might be better off with taking a cab from the hotel to the nearest Metro station.

From the Dulles airport you can take a shuttle bus to the Metro station and metro will take you almost everywhere you will need to go in DC, also we have a great metro bus system.

The Metro (Subway) in the City is Great !
Your Hotel may have a shuttle to and from the airport and maybe a shuttle to the Metro or to DC

If you are staying very close to the airport in Dulles then you are kinda screwed. Best bet is to cab or bus to the Vienna Metro station and then catch the subway. However remember that there are also large parts of the city that aren't easily Metro Accessable Georgetown for instance so also bring good shoes

You're out by Dulles? that stinks. There is a bus from Dulles to central DC that leaves every 30 minutes or so from the airport. There is also a pricier bus that goes between Dulles and Falls Church metro. Your options are pretty limited though if you're that far out from DC.

The metro (subway) is an economical way to get around DC. You can purchase a card that allows you to travel all day for a reasonable rate. You can take it down to the mall at which point you can walk around such places as the national mall, the white house, and US Capital. Get this, there is a cab company in the District called ASSASSIN CAB. Hmmm. Oh well, there are buses and cabs but they will be pricey. Also there is a bus tour thing that goes around DC and you can see the sites. I don't know what the cost is though as the last time I was in the DC area was Nov 2001.

Buses run from some of the metros to Dulles, if you're just trying to get around the DC area the metro is cheap, easy, and pretty safe to use.

Yep. Take the metro. (our subway system). You can take a cab from Dulles to the metro in Vienna (only a few minutes away) and then head to DC that way. Whilst in DC, just take cabs. Everything is pretty accessible that way downtown. :) Enjoy your stay!
