The number one way is not a quick fix answer. Reading. Lots of reading, is the answer. I was actually recently reading an article about this very thing. Your best writers are usually heavy readers. You learn different styles, how to use nuances to make a point, how to punctuate, spell, and use proper grammer. It will increase your vocabulary and give you so many other words to paint pictures in the mind's eye of your readers.

I was not blessed with a writer's imagination, and I am so envious of those who can weave stories in which I can lose myself! If you are one of these people, remember, it is a culmination of experience that produces the most prolific writers. And frequently, they can be experiences garnered through the wonders of another writer's imagination.

I am sure there are a plethera of sites on the internet with examples of writing styles, and any other exercise in honing writing skills. But beyond these, continue to build your compliment of shared experiences of other writers. Becoming a good writer is a continuing pursuit, an evolution of thought and emotion put to print to share with others. Enjoy the journey.

I have the opposite problem. I am a fiction writer who is finding it difficult acclimating into an analytical writer of essays for my English degree. For your problem I would suggest that you not give up the classics, but do pick up a modern novel of some sort. Read a modern short story collection (there are many out there). This will give you an inkling of how modern writers operate. While the classics are important, I've found that whatever I read I tend to imitate grammatically in my writing. I would suggest that you digest some modern prose so that your frame of mind is more contemporary and geared toward the modern reader. Writing like Henry James will get you nowhere, I'm afraid. Really and truly, the best way to improve your writing is to read. I wouldn't suggest any other method, actually.

You can improve your writing by practicing. Just make up short stories when you're bored and it would gradually improve. You can also write slow and make each letter perfect then you'll get used to it and fix your writing.

Use pronouns only when it is obvious who is being referenced. Answer; who, what, when, where, why, how.
