because most service industry people make only $2.13 an hr. and yes it is their choice to do the job. I was a bartender for years, they money I made in tips is what I lived on and took care of my kids. I took a job as a legal assistant for the hours now that my 5 year old is in school, and it was a huge pay-cut. I made my tips by giving great service to my regulars, and giving my customers a good time, while they were at my bar... But to the ones who did not tip well (20% or better) trust me they did not get the extra service, nor did I get in any hurry to get them anything they needed, and people around you know how you are treating their bartender, so they would pretty much run you out of the bar area, by sitting next to and being loud with all their friends, until the customer would get the point and leave... so if you do not want to tip, go home and make your own drinks, it is cheaper that way, and if you can't tip well, you should not be out spending it anyway. Now if it was up to me we would get paid a fair wage by employers & the tip would be based on service...if you know how to change the law to do that, hey I am on your side...tip, To Inssure Promptness, (my spelling is off on that one)

I hate tipping bartenders for beer. They don't do anything but just pop the cap off a bottle or spend 10 seconds pouring it. However for a mixed drink it isn't a bad idea because then they control the quality of the drink.

Are you asking why you should tip your server or bartender after you've been served a drink? If so, then the answer is "Because, that's how it works. Servers rely on tips."
Or, are you asking why you tip over after drinking alcoholic drinks? If so, then the answer is "Alcohol affects your equilibrium."

Cause pouring a pint of Guinness from tap is no walk in the park. Bartenders stand all day, deal with drunk a**holes and get pain minimum wage.. Plus they have to keep that friendly smile on their face all night long. A good bartender with a good attitude who pours little head deserves a tip!

I'm a server and used to be a bartender. If there was someone at my bar that wasn't tipping me, they would be the last in line to get a beer. And for the person who complained about tipping on a beer--if you don't like it, sit your cheap a$$ on your sofa at home and then you won't have to worry about it.

I tip very well at a bar probably because I'm usually feeling pretty good you know and I like to keep my drinks strong and they take care of you if they like you

You should move to Britain. The Bartenders there won't accept tips, but if you chat with them they'll let you buy them a drink.

the real reason is because for every sale bartenders make the government takes out 8% of the sale for income tax. does not matter if you actually received a tip or not. lots of nights they pay tax for being stiffed.

if you don't want to tip don't, but watch the beginning of the movie Reservoir Dogs for an educated discussion for reasons to tip a waiter, bar tender , etc

you tip for service not the drink and the size of the tip is proportional to the service
