I'm gonna throw a monkey wrench into this question. And not just cuz I'm a Christian. Truly, it depends on the motivation of the heart. If either one of them does works of charity and love because they seek to "feel good about themselves" or tell people all the good they did, neither of them has done better. A Christian who just goes to church doesn't do anyone much good. Jesus commanded us to go into all the world and bring the good news to men. Good news is best brought through love :) God always, always honors a heart with selfless motivation. So, if the atheist does things because they have a sincere desire to make the world around them a better place, then naturally, our atheist friend has lived a life more akin to the teachings of Christianity and, of course, a better life example than a Christian sitting up in their pew every Sunday, doing nothing to help the world in which they live. I know you see a lot of looney Christians in your travels, folks, but there are TRULY a lot of good people who are Christians. As can be said about atheists, I'm sure. The long and short of it is, none of us is REALLY good. It's not our belief systems that make us good. It is how we treat other people in the world around us. Love NEVER fails.

This is a very smart question b/c I have asked myself the same thing. I came up with the answer... on earth, I think the Atheist would be given more credibility b/c what good is a Christian who is self righteous and doesn't do good to others. I think b/c of the kindness of the Atheist's heart, God will bless them. Yet, for the Christian, I just hope they get a reality check while they're still on earth b/c when it's all said and done.... we all have to answer to God whether or not we believe in Him or not.

You have left out what makes a Christian a Christian and is left to us in the end? If a person is a true Christian than they have done better because they have accepted Jesus' gift and sacrifice that nullifies all the evil they have done. Good works don't get you into Heaven and only God allows someone to do good works, and it does not matter if they are Christian or not.

Simply sitting in church isn't really beneficial to anyone. Donating time, money and items is a really great way to benefit society. I'd say that the better person is someone who does more good works of charity.

Atheists, because at least they are helping someone.
Isn't Christianity all about helping people anyway?
Well, that person is not an honest to goodness devout Christian then.

i would have to say the atheist who is helping people has more use to society then the christian who sits in a church and hates on the atheist and does nothing to contribute to society

I suppose the answer to that one would be dependant on your own point of view.
From a biblical standpoint, all who profess with their mouth and their HEART belong to God and have automatically done better than the one whom rejects their creator.
There are many Christians whom are considered immature or milk fed, and may remain so even into their golden aged years. If their heart believes upon their creator God, they are guaranteed entrance into eternity with God.
