A while back my little brother had a story he had to type up for school. Now every time I go to open up Word his story shows up, I've even deleted it and it's still there. When I try to make a blank document it's still there. Any help?

Some of the folks are right-your brother overwrote your default blank document with his story. But I haven't seen someone tell you yet how exactly you can fix it. And it's not easy. You have to find the location of your Word Templates folder, and it's not always in the same spot on every computer.

After getting into Word and seeing your brother's story, Go to the Main menu, click on File, click on New. If you have a recent version of Word, on the right, you'll see a panel appear. Look for the last bold heading "New from template"; below it you'll see "Normal". Click on "Normal" to open the default Word template. It'll contain your brother's story. But it won't let you just delete the junk and save it. You've only opened a copy of it. But, now you've got the location of the Word Template folder on your computer.

Now, go back to the Main menu, click on File, but this time, click on Open. Hopefully, it will show at the top of the dialog box beside "Look in" a white box that contains a yellow folder icon and says "Templates". NOW click on the "Normal" file to select it(in the area below the Templates folder name), and finally click on the Open button in the lower right hand corner of the dialog box. It'll open your brother's story, but it will say at the very top of Word, on the line above the File command, "Normal", which means you've opened up the Normal or Word default template.
Now you can fix it! Click on the first line of your brother's story, press the delete key and get rid of all the text. Now, you can save it like any other file, go to the main menu, click on File, then Save. You can close Word, and the next time it opens up, it will open a copy of the newly updated "Normal" template file.

Good luck-it's not easy! But I've done it...

I think there is a file called "normal document" which is the blank document that should come up when you open up Word or when you hit new document. His story may have somehow replaced that normal document. I don't know how you fix that unless you reinstall Microsoft Word. Not sure, maybe someone else has a better answer.

Have you tried deleting the entire program from the PC then reinstalling. Its possible that what was saved is the default document so everytime Word opens, it opens with the story still there.

You may wish to check the document template which opens upon startup- that's in the Options dialog.
Make sure that Normal.dot is a clean file, and doesn't have your brother's story in it.

Sounds like it's been saved a template and your installation of Word is using it as the standard template for new documents.
