Outstanding answer by Drop Zone...

Organization Maintenance usually consists of swapping out parts and boxes, cleaning and corrosion control, and changing fluids...

Intermediate Maintenance is where the boxes, engines etc are sent for testing and repair... AIMD in the Navy is the Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Division.

Depot Level Maintenance is for complete rebuilds... often AT the manufacturer.

I did Organizational Maintenance on the SH-60B as an aircrewman / plane-captain with Quality Assurance qualifications in survival equipment, corrosion control, and airframe (hydraulics). I also went 3 times to the Sikorsky plant to pick up new and rebuild helicopters.

Well I didn't work with aircraft but I worked in the motor pool for a army reserve unit. I'll extend on some stuff the guys above said.

Let's say you are working on a vehicle and you find somthing wrong. (the troubleshooting is done at the unit level to determine the problem.) You go step by step through the tech manual for your vehicle and at some point they will accually say.. This repair is designated to depot level or whatever yoru branch of the military calls it. We called it The Amsa shop. So you know exactly who can do what repairs. So if your are in an organizational unit maintnence you will never do engine pulls or things like that. It is somthing to think about if you really want to be a "real mechanic" in the military or just an oil changer lol.

Things you can do in a garage with limited tools and limited technical expertise is a good description of organizational. Essentially the unit that owns the equipment can do some minor repairs and tune-ups. Intermediate is the base or division maintenance personnel with better tools and better techincal expertise to fix and return to the unit. Kinda like the Dealership. Depot is like sending it back to the manufacturing plant. A total rebuild.

o-level you work directly on the aircraft in a squadron. installing and removing parts. troubleshooting, and repairs.

i-level also called AIMD (navy) MALS (USMC) works on said removed parts and either gives them back to the squadron or back on the supply shelf. basically the i levels job is logistical support for the squadrons. they also work in the supply assest.

depot is the major tear down. done by civillians.
