My wife works in retail, specifically womens clothing. A great deal of her customers are Christian women who come in looking for clothing to wear to church. A large number of these women demand to know whether or not someone else from their church has purchased the same outfit, and one even went so far as to curse my wife for not knowing who every member of her church was. Is this indicative of people using church for social benefit, or something else?

People attend church for various reasons. Sadly enough many people attend for all of the wrong reasons.

I attend church for praise and worship - not to secure social standings. If I step into a church that seems its more about social status, a fashion show or a swarm of hypocrites I am immediately turned off and I don't return.

i know when I was a youth leader I had a lot of kids who only came for the fun stuff and didn't participate in the actual discipleship portion or the outreach we did. I actually spoke with a few paretns who said they didn't make their kids come to those things because they didn't feel they were important, so to some bowling nights are more important than community outreach?

Yeah I would say there are definitely people who use the church for social benefit.

George Barna, a noted researcher, did a study several years ago that showed that 50% of the people didn't not believe in Jesus but they attended church because of social pressures and business opportunities.

church is not a social club! these women need to get their heart with GOD , and if I were you I would a new church. Church is about worshiping GOD , not who is wearing the new prada.

Seems to me this is indicative of a chuch where God has been pushed out the back door to make room for the fashion parade.

Churches are bodies of believers whom put God in charge of their lives, not the latest fashions.

1TI 2:9 I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
