Permanent decisions should not be made by teen-agers. The current tattoo fad is just that... and you will be permanently marked. Saturday Night Live did a great skit on all of these girls with their lower back tattoos and what they will look like when they are 60 and 70 years old.

Suffice to say, don't do it until you have many years of adulthood under your belt.

My answer is no. Neither have asked about one so it hasn't been an issue..yet. My son is 15 and my daughter 13 so right now it is usually my son with the 'out there' questions. When he is out on his own and paying his own way, he can get a tattoo if he wants to but not now. I'd rather let him pierce his ear. An earring can be removed and the hole can close up if he decides to change his mind later. PS - His Dad won't go for it but that is another story. He got to grow his hair longer within certain guidelines, which was something else his Dad wasn't going to agree with at first. But again, hair can change. Tattoos are for the most part permanent.

If my daughter wanted a tattoo...and it was well thought out and would have lasting meaning to her...then I think I would think about letting her get it. As long as she was 16 or older. A friend from high school got a tattoo on her back to honor her father who had passed away and her mother signed off on it since that's not something you're ever going to change your mind about. My cousin snuck out and had one done with a fake ID when her grandparents died to commemorate them. I think I would rather have my daughter get one in a safe, clean tattoo parlor then have her sneak around and get it done by some nutjob with who knows what type of equipment. However if it was a stupid tattoo I'd put my foot down and make her wait until 18. And even then I'd try to talk her out of it. Tattoo's are so common now and so many people have stupid ones. They should be well thought out meaningful works of art that happen to be permanently affixed to your body.

It would depend on how old a teen we are talking here. 13, not happening. 16, I'd probably at least try to listen to why.
Probably have them tell me, or write out why they want one. Why is it a good idea. Convince me.
Then I'd want to know what they wanted, and where they wanted it located.
If it was anything I found onjectionable, I'd probably say no. You're gong to have to wait til they are 18
They would need to do some research to see who has the cleanest shop in the area. The last thing anyone wants is a disease because someone cuts corners in a tat shop.
Also they would need to find a way to pay for it themselves, with aboslutely no money that they didn't earn themselves.
Then if they can do all of that...then I would have them find exactly what they want, the exact image. Then have them put it on them with ink, or henna and live with it for a month or two.
Tats are permanent. They are painful and expensive to remove. If you are going to get one, you need to be absolutely sure it's what you want, where you want it, and the size you want it to be.
If they were 16 or older, could meet all of that, it would prove to me that they were serious about it, and I'd probably sign the consent form. But before I did, I'd have them sit down in the chair and have the tattoo artist use an empty tat gun on them to make sure they can handle the pain. I'd probably do that first, honestly. LOL It hurts. Especially the outline.
I'm 40, I have one tattoo, and I plan on getting another one in the next few months.I'm taking my time deciding EXACTLY what I want. So I am not against tattoos in general.
That said, I don't want my kids to get something they would regret later. My citeria for a tat for myself is--- no names-unless it's your child, no where on my body I wouldn't feel comfortable showing a stranger, and nothing I would be ashamed showing my parent or my child.

My teen does want to get a tattoo and I have said "You can get one after you turn 18 and are an adult able to make an adult decision. Until then I am the parent and no you can not get a tattoo.."

I have also discussed how tattos are permanent (Yes I know about removal but for all intents and purposes a tattoo is gotten with the intention of it being permanent.) with him, I have advised him never to tattoo anyones name on his body excluding his children should he choose to have any in the future... People (girlfriends, lovers, wives, etc) come and go in life the only people who are a constant are your children... You don't want the name "Emily" tattooed on your body when you are now with Joan.... I have also advised only getting tattoos in easily hidden places (I.e. where normal clothing can be worn and the tattoo is covered)...

If my child chooses to get a tattoo after they are of adult age so be it until then I am the parent and I choose to say no... My children respect my words and know I want only what is best for them in the long run... If he has 5 tattoos when he is 26 that is fine as he will have gotten them all after age 18 when he is making his own adult decisions...

I have compromised with my son and he is allowed to wear temperary tattoos (The get them wet and apply kind) .... He also had a spray tattoo applied this summer (It lasts about 3-4 weeks before fading)... He is allowed to wear them with the understanding tht they will be removed promptly should an occassion arise (i.e. family pictures, him being asked to be bestman at his cousins wedding, etc) in which him wearing a tattoo is not in the best of taste.... He has agreed to these rules and has agreed to not gettinging a permanent tattoo until after 18...

There are worse things than tattoos in life. If it was a discreet tattoo then it should be ok.Maybe ask the parenst to help you pick it out. I'm not saying go out and get tattoos all over your face and neck. While tattoos are becoming more acceptable they can make getting hired for some employment. We spend our entire life telling our children to not base their opinions of others on such a shallow basis as appearance. How many people do we bypass in life who are percieved as too heavy ,too thin, too ugly, ,has a disability, too (fill in the blank) and we feel quite justified in making that judgement based on the person we see not the person we know.

As a tattoo artist myself, I will inform you that it is illegal for someone under the age of 18 go get a tattoo in the first place. Any respectable artist will refuse to tattoo a minor, even with parental consent. I am a firm believer that people don't have a strong sense of who they are and what they represent until after the age of 18, and since tattoos are a form of self-expression, it is all around a bad idea.

it depends on how old the teenager is were they are going to get it and who is going to be doing it. Or in other words I would take my 17 year old son to a real tattoo place to get a small tattoo done, just so I didn't have to worry about him having one of his friends do it for him. But any younger then that I would slap them on the back on the head a little then poke them with a needle and ask them if they can handle the pain, cause that's what they would have to go throw only worse if they ever came home with one.

I would say no...Then take her shopping where they sell temporary tattoos ( yes, there are some very realistic ones out there) They last for about a week and then you can take them off with baby oil. I have some beautiful small butterfly ones and I enjoy being able to change them every couple weeks and there is absolutely NO PAIN and No chance of Infection.
Some mail order catalogs have them too.
Oriental trading is a good one ONLY the NON Glitter ones Though.
Hope this helps.

No way! I think many times teenagers, and lots of other people, get tattoos of something they're into and, all too soon, their likes change and they regret the tattoo. That's too young to be scarring up the body in a permanent way. If he/she wants to change their looks, maybe offer a not-so-permanent alternative like piercings or hair dye.
