YEs Cargo ships and ocean freighters contribute to global warming but they are more environmentally friendly than shipping by truck or plane as they can carry much much more. The trucking industry is very inefficent rail is a much better option hope that helps

Sooner or later people will figure out that it isn't just fossil fuels and the answers aren't all that simple. The freighters burn oil, the exhaust gases are more like that of diesel than a gas engine. Allegedly, diesel engines are better for the environment but I am sceptical. It wasn't all that long ago that gas engines had to get catalytic converters to save the environment. That increased carbon dioxide output of cars. Next year they are gong to declare that diesels are bad. Perhaps we should convert to wood burning? That's even worse for the environment and produces more CO2.

Despite what most people believe, as a result of all the hype, the climate change issues are far from understood. Global warming is not a fact, it is a theory. Twenty years ago it was an ice age that was going to destroy us, based on the same low quality science and promoted by the same people. I'd think we'd learn to be smarter about who we blindly believe.

If you really care about the environment, you have to go vegetarian. Meat production causes extensive pollution and is a huge drain on our resources. It even causes more pollution than these SUVs people always complain about. It is also easy to become meat free and much kinder to animals. Meat is no longer needed as a food source as many other kinder options exist. In fact, most meat sold today is in the form of stuff like hamburgers and hot dogs and is bad for your health. The only real reason to eat meat is for entertainment and the animals pay the price for our entertainment as they are abused and slaughtered. It is hypocritical to say you care about the environment and love animals while eating meat.

The answer is yes like anything with an engine that runs on "fossil fuels" produces CO2 which is considered a GHG leading to global warming. Sorry I don't know the magnitude.

I am sure that they have a part in it.

I've recently seen where an engineer is going to attach a very large sail to traditional boats to allow them to use the wind to help reduce the reliance on fossil fuels.
